The InterPlanetary File System [IPFS] is a justifiably intimidating name. Fundamentally it’s a secure, decentralized way of keeping content online

Today the internet primarily functions by users accessing central databases. The client-to-server, Hypertext Transfer Protocol [HTTP]. One goes to a specific web address, a URL, such as a social media site or online store. When communicating with that social media site or online store, information exchanged is basically between user’s computers and the company’s. Content is hosted in a central location. Should the company wish to alter, adjust or delete their hosted content then, unilaterally, they can. The company not only controls content but also gets credit for hosting it when other's search to find such. This is why company's may love to have your photos on their databases, even if they're 'protecting' these photos for you

IPFS re-interprets the centralized exchange methodology. It does this through decentralizing hosting and recall

It offers a new format of internet use. For The Other Blockchain® it assists with registered multimedia and content ownership being personally claimed with files securely stored and decentralized access controlled by its owners. It was created as a peer-to-peer method for hypermedia, using distributed file systems. For those more technically inclined, the whitepaper can be found here

Instead of a company’s server holding a full file on their centralized database, imagine that this same file was scattered out in little chunks across many locations. These little chunks could then only be recombined by using the right password. On their own individual chunks mean nothing and because of their spread they’re basically impossible to delete. They are in too many locations

For TOF®s purposes, say you had a 10,000 piece jigsaw puzzle and decided to send one piece to 10,000 different people around the world. The people holding these pieces will return their part of the puzzle when you give them the secret password. Only you can have the full picture when recombining the returned pieces. In a method similar to blockchain itself, secured chunks of information are added and accessible across multiple sources. This is kind of the IPFS concept

TOF® believes owner's should control and benefit from their intellectual property. Businesses attempting to profit from or otherwise use owner's work should not

The Other Blockchain® anonymizes immutable entries to protect anonymity within decentralized ledgers. A visual thumbnail indication is displayed on result pages for immediate recognition and autonomous ownership claim by the owner. Please click here to view an example

However until entry of a unique IPFS cryptographic 'multihash' download access of the full registered file and or multimedia is locked. Owner's receive and own their cryptographic hashtag upon registration

Should an owner agree to sell or transfer IP rights of their files or multimedia, following purchase they may simply share their IPFS hashtag. Download access is decentralized and bypasses many restrictions. For instance, if a video wasn't allowed to be hosted in a particular country - using IPFS that country could not block the video's download from The Other Blockchain®

Created in 2014, this is new technology. Currently IPFS is an open source project, meaning experts and engineers from around the world are contributing to its development. For further readings Hacker Noon has a slightly technical overview here with some excellent links, there is a straightforward introduction on Medium here, and the project itself can be found on GitHub here

While the security is robust and access decentralized, ownership control of IPFS cryptographic hashtags is crucial. These basically constitute a key and once someone has a copy they're able to access it anytime. TOF® reminds registered owners to protect their IPFS hashtags, not to publicly post these and further suggests implementing PGP or similar encryption or encrypted communication protocols during their direct transfer or exchange
